End
of Summer Celebration: Fun for the Whole Family!
The End of Summer Celebration was a blast for the whole
family that included free hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and
drinks, free face painting, a balloon artist, bouncies,
and a water slide. There was a talent contest and fashion
show that had the audience laughing until their sides hurt
and surprised at the talents some possessed.
We also had single-elimination billiards competition and
a basketball challenge. All in all, it was a great way to
remember the Summer Fun program that included Parks and
Recreation trips to Disneyland, Raging Waters, Magic Mountain,
The Aquarium of the Pacific, Knott's Berry Farm, and Leway
Sailing. PAL took kids to Dromo1 Kart Racing, Catalina Island,
fishing, Backpacking Adventures into the Angeles National
Forest and the Yosemite National Forest.

Backpacking
at Fall Creek in the Angeles National Forest
PAL members got to get away from the complexity of city
life and experience the simple life of the "Great Outdoors"
at Fall Creek Camp Grounds as one of three backpacking adventure
trips. For more information about our two other trips, read
the PAL Journal Archive for July 2006.
Detective B. McPhail and Parks and Recreation Leader Specialist
Faoliu Utoafili lead six PAL youth on a backpacking trip
into the Angeles National Forest towards Fall Creek Camp
Grounds. The camp grounds were set along a large creek,
which was our drinking water source and water play area.
The youth learned how to make bridges from fallen wood trees,
they created small pools in the creek, purified/filtered
our drinking water from the creek, cooked their own meals,
and learned about hunting weapons used to gather food in
earlier tribal societies. We hiked to Fall Creek Water Falls
and explored along the creek and fire roads.
